Water Plants

Hardy Water Lilies-These beauties come in white, yellow, pink, and red. They usually bloom throughout the warm season, going dormant during the cold months. Hardy in all zones. Full sun is best. The top of the soil is best 8-12" below the water although water plants are forgiving and will thrive in many situations.

Tropical Water Lilies-These lovely plants prefer warmer conditions and grow best in the same regions that orange trees grow. In colder areas store dormant tubers in damp sand over winter or buy new ones each year. Tropical water lilies have a wider range of colors including white, pink, red, yellow, blue, and  purple. Full sun is best. The top of the soil is best 8-12" below the water, although water plants are forgiving and will thrive in many situations.

Papyrus-These plants range in size from miniatures to the traditional tall stately varieties that are a mainstay in Egyptian movies. We have several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness and heights from 18" to 10' tall. All prefer rich, moist soil or with roots submerged in water. Takes sun or shade.

Horsetail-Hardy in all zones, takes sun or part shade. A great plant for the edge of ponds, although it can be invasive and it is wise to contain it. Good in containers too. Very striking architectural look in the landscape.

Elephant's Ear-Huge leaves in green or black or dark veined. Very dramatic. Tender, tubers can be lifted and stored over the winter in colder locations, or treat as an an annual. We have a good sucess rate overwintering most years in our nursery, but we do caution customers that it is tender. Green varieties take some sun if well watered, but all are best in warm filtered shade. Will grow in rich, moist soil or along the bank in shallow water. Great plant!

Corkscrew Rush-Twisty spiraling stems. Cool plant! Hardy in all zones. Takes full sun or light shade. Grows at the edge of ponds or in shallow water. Also good in pots.

Water Iris-We have multiple varieties of water iris including Louisiana Iris, Gamecock Iris, Yellow Water Iris, etc. The sturdier water irises bloom best in full sun while the Loisiana and Gamecock Iris prefer some protection from afternoon sun. All will grow in moist soil at the water's edge or submerged in shallow water.

Other Water and Margin Plants-These vary depending on season and availabilty. Some of the plants we frequently stock are water clovers, chameleon plants, parrots feather, water poppies, obedient plants, lizard's tail, spider lilies, variegated celery, pickerel, cattails, etc.
